Live Fact, a self-sustaining gig venue in Taman Danau Desa, Kuala Lumpur, hosted Japanese folk singer Ichiko Aoba in her Asian tour as well as local indie darling Liyana Fizi in a double bill gig. opening for Aoba-san and Liyana Fizi was up and coming Straw Lim, playing her particular brand of folk pop with an interesting application of guitar reverb to accompany her playing. her performance was a little bit rough around the edges, though it adds to her charm. playing after Straw is Liyana Fizi (accompanied by her guitarist Rudy), who played through most of her popular songs together with a new song from her hopefully upcoming new record. for the most part, one cannot go wrong with Liyana's playing - having already seen her during Record Store Day 2015 in Teenage Head Records it was such a delight to be able to watch her play an extended set.

Aoba-san plays a blend of ethereal avant-folk unlike any i've ever heard before - relying only on her impressive guitar plucking and wispy vocal work to evoke a childlike atmosphere that is tranquil and yet playful. most impressive is her stage presence that commands the listener's attention with her peculiar animal sounds and guitar virtuoso work. though i've never heard of her work prior to the gig, i was thoroughly impressed by Aoba-san's playing and walked home with a copy of her latest record on compact disc.

a trio of beautiful ladies playing variations of folk pop music in one gig is simply a magical sight to behold.
